New environmental land management schemes welcomed

6 January 2022

Responding to the Government’s unveiling of two new environmental land management schemes today (6 Jan), the Local Nature Recovery and Landscape Recovery schemes, Dr Richard Benwell, CEO of Wildlife and Countryside Link, said:

"The schemes aim to restore an area of habitat the size of Cambridgeshire by 2042. If they can be combined with well-monitored, higher environmental standards across the wider farmed landscape, this will truly be a landmark shift in the way farming and nature support each other.

"The detail today shows the Government is aiming in the right direction. But the next couple of years will be critical in ensuring farmers and land managers have the confidence to join the schemes and be part of the UK’s great nature recovery mission. High confidence, clarity, and commitment for the schemes is vital – as well as guarantees of an increasing budget over time – to meet Government ambitions and lift us from being one of the world’s most nature-depleted countries to a world leader for nature restoration."
